Notebook template: http://notebook-template.wikidot.com

It is a simple notebook application for taking and organizing notes easily.

It hasn't been tested in all browsers yet.

That's great!

Liking the layout - very similar to Microsoft OneNote, from what I can see. Also like how the sticky note in the sidebar works :)

edit: Now that I've read the main page, I realise that you designed it to be like OneNote anyway!

Hmm ... private?
leigerleiger 1257198120|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

(T)his notebook allows you to … Make certain pages private

How is this possible, when private categories have not yet been implemented?

Well, it isn't possible, but if you add the tag _private, it hides all the page content using iftags, so only by viewing the source can a page's content be known. And I omitted the Source option on the side bar in order to make sure that doesn't happen.

Can you please give me a link to a (permanent) living page that is private?

I don't think I understand your question very well.

Do you mean this?

You answered my question perfectly.

Now let me show you proof that no page on a public wiki can be made private.

Interesting technique. So this was impossible, until CSIs were introduced?

Re: Hmm ... private?
James KanjoJames Kanjo 1257295595|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

Correct.

This technique has helped me a lot to help other people on the Wikidot community (most of them don't have "open" privileges to view the options menu at the bottom). I can finally "see" their source code, and tell them where they've gone wrong.

At the same time, it compromises the privacy of people's source code.

We should therefore have an option whether to enable CSIs (and the Clone Module) per category on a site…

Suggestions
leigerleiger 1257199308|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

Overlapping buttons

ff_overlap.png

The buttons overlap a bit. Mozilla Firefox 3.5.3, resolution 1280x1024

Maybe try putting that column on the left side of the page?

Add a %%parent%% or "Back" link

ff_parent.png

Add a link to the parent here? I know that the breadcrumbs are available…but it seems logical to have one there as well.

Make temporary notes more intuitive

ff_tempnote.png

I typed my note into the NewPage module, then pressed enter. Then I was confronted with creating a new page and decided to add something random into the page text (Okay? :)). It seems that only the page text appears on the sticky-note :(

Here is the page in question: http://2010sp5.wikidot.com/notebook:24

So - perhaps you could remove the NewPage module and just make it into a link, then hide the title section with CSS, as long as you make sure only hiding it for "temporary note" creation and not for other notebook pages.

Or you could change it so that the title of the temporary note has some significance on the sticky-note list.

NewPage module in the sidebar

On any page that is not in the notebook category, e.g. start, the NewPage module simply creates a new page, as one would expect.

I'm thinking it would be better if those pages were sent to the Unfiled Notes section instead.

Unfiled notes

It seems to be impossible to create an unfiled note. How do I do that? :|

Overlapping buttons

Define overlapping? I don't see anything wrong, but I was thinking about using a "text-align:left" rather than right since that might make IE stop crying.

Add a %%parent%% or "Back" link

That's a good idea.

Make temporary notes more intuitive

I wasn't satisfied with how I had done this either. The point of the title was to give certain notes precedence. For example, putting a 1 would make the item first in the list (unless something else has a 0). I'll use some templates to make this more obvious.

NewPage module in the sidebar

I suppose I could do this if the sole purpose of the site is notebooking.

Unfiled notes

Good point :)

Thanks for the comments!

By "overlapping" I meant that the right hand side of the buttons is cut off, and you can't see that side of them. I posted a screenshot of it as well.

Oh, that. It was designed like that, actually, like a tab coming off the side. But it doesn't look elegant especially in IE, so I'm going to see if switching the orientation to the left side works.

James KanjoJames Kanjo 1257329475|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

I, like Shane, hadn't even considered that it was designed that way…

Timothy, the reason it looks “cut off” is because there's no line to distinguish the end of the buttons with the edge of the side bar.

Perhaps try one of two things first:

  1. Create a border-right on each item
  2. Create a border-right on the side-bar

I understood your original idea, but agree that a border on the right would have looked better. I like it flipped on the left side better. Aesthetics aside (we're kind of nit-picking here!), this is an amazing bit of work! Nice going…
