The Power Of Wikidot Wikilikes

This is a child-page of the-power-of-wikidot, so have a look at that first
Here a discussion on wikilikes.
Is it a good idea to simulate a wiki on wikidot?
Can it be done?
Did somebody do it?
How far do we need to go?…

You mean like http://monobook-template.wikidot.com and http://monodot-template.wikidot.com?

Yes, it's cool that wikidot can do this so why not "show-it-off"?
Since so many people a trusted with the way wikipedia and others work… Why change a familiar way of working?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
*takes breath*
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“Hey hey, ho ho, Wikipedia's got to go!”
DIE WIKIPEDIA!!!!!!! DIE!!!!!!!
Have I got the point across yet? Sure, we should post an obvious link to the monobook theme from demo.wikidot.com. Maybe we could even use the theme on a wiki category. But we are definitely NOT using the theme on the entire demo website!
We're Wikidot! Not Wikipedia! To me, the iron-giant templates are somewhat of a Wikidot trademark now, so we should use those to demonstrate Wikidot.
Yeah. I agree with James :-)

you don't hear me shouting no to all those in my opinion "stupid" game-wiki-sites. I merely suggested that one of the things the demo-project could demonstrate would be to simulate a wikipedia-look-alike.
Wikidot is able of doing great things. Education is on of them and I don't think, considering the amount of wikipedia-like-pages, wikipedia is doing such a bad thing.

FWIW I like the mediawiki emulations because (a) they tell people clearly that Wikidot can do the same as mediawiki and (b) for people who already know Wikipedia, there is much less stress to switch to Wikidot.
So it's essentially an excellent way of converting people off mediawiki onto Wikidot.
I'd probably never use the Wikipedia emulations for one of my projects, but that is a different thing.

That was the very impression I got from you… I'm sorry to have misunderstood that.
Well if that's what you're suggesting, then I agree… but I would still restrict the theme to a “wiki” category on the site, not the entire site.
Wikipedia looks great from the outside… but try to add an article to help educate the world, and it'll be rostered on for speedy deletion within hours. The internal community of Wikipedia have essentially destroyed the “wiki” concept completely…
For example, did you know that there's no article for “Wikidot” in Wikipedia? Several different people at different times over the years have spent hours of their time writing quality unbiased articles on Wikidot. All of them were dismissed as “unimportant” and therefore rostered on for Speedy deletion.
This is why I'm anti-wikipedia: Because the Wikipedia community limit the education of Wikipedia to “important” topics only… which is also bad because the word “important” is completely subjective.
It's not quite that. Wikipedia policy rejects original research, on principle. If you want an article on the Southern Australian Blue Snail, you have to (a) find or create material somewhere else and (b) refer to, summarize, and quote this material on Wikipedia.
There may be a policy to censor services like Wikidot but I've not really seen that.
Now, personally, having had many fine articles filled with excellent (but original) research deleted, I've learned my lesson.

That's true, Pieter, but what I said was true too. Allow me to quote from the Wikidot page itself:
OK.
So let's start a project to get Wikidot onto Wikipedia! At the least, it means editing the page somewhere else, so we don't lose content. It also means fixing whatever reasons are given for deletion until it's no longer deleted.
With enough stubbornness, the page will remain.

Hehehe, count me in! Would be great to see a page about Wikidot on there.

But Shane, you're busy for the rest of October, young man! ;-)

I totally agree James. When talking to people about wikis I now refer to Wikipedia as a very bad example of what a wiki should be.
