I'm a real advocate for Wikidot, and I love embracing its powers. As we all do, I'm sure.
We all know that Wikidot is extremely powerful, the most powerful Wiki engine this planet has to offer. It's an impressive masterpiece. But the problem is this: we know that. We, being experts, know all the ins and outs, ups and downs, unders and overs, lefts and rights of Wikidot… but when it comes to convincing other people that Wikidot is powerful… we really can't put it into words.
We need to SHOW others why Wikidot is powerful
For the best way to convince people that Wikidot is amazing, is to DEMONSTRATE Wikidot being amazing.
I propose we work together to collaborate the ultimate demonstration on what Wikidot has to offer.
Pieter has given us two appropriate site-names for this purpose:
Option 1 | Option 2 |
---|---|
DEMO.wikidot.com | WHY.wikidot.com |
Please take your vote on which one we should use:
The Power Of Wikidot Wikilikes | By Steven Heynderickx | 16 Comments | 05 Oct 2009 18:14 |
Both names are cool but 'demo' gets my vote for this: in the days of microcomputers, a 'demo' was a piece of work that showed what a group could do, within some constraints.
So how about a collection of 'demos', each showing some neat work?
The "why" sounds a good place for a presentation (slides or video). Maybe people writing about why they use Wikidot.
Portfolio
Agreed.
Why.Wikidot.com could become the location of user testimonials, with people able to add their own testimonial at any time.

I know you just started this project because I could yesterday still get the site name, and I thought "that's not safe". So I tried to register it so nobody could block your idea. But I had no sites left on my name steven_heynderickx. So I didn't come to it. I see today that you started.
I think it's a good idea, but what I thought was not good at the whole wikidot story is the fact that you can not be a beginner. You need to have knowledge of computer things.
I don't think that the target group of wikidot are baby boomers, but there are many out there. They can surf, they know some stuff, but they never made HTML pages, they don't know the concept of opening and closing containers… So if you want to show what wikidot can do… You really need to start from groundlevel.
Maybe an embedded video from youtube…. maybe a "hello world this is my first page" project… But gide them, don't say "try everthing from the menu"…
unless of course if you want to do this project for people like yourself, but they already know how good wikidot is and what you can do with it.
So YES it is a good project, but you really need to think this over in the way you (or the expert community) are going to do this.
So what's the plan Stan?
Or lets make a plan…
Sorry for the comment I made, I realise that it is the really "default" - page and that the content has not been altered yet.
Mea culpa
Well, it seems that we have a winner: DEMO.Wikidot.com
Now I've just done a brainstorm of Wikidot, please take a look:
You can use Wikidot for three things:
But I feel like I'm missing something important…
Well, Music/Photos/Videos are reasonably similar so you could probably combine them somehow.
What are you missing?

I thought so too. That's why I put them under the “Life” umbrella…
What do you mean? Wikidot can't do that…
Huh? Now I'm completely lost
Well, using external tools, it can.
Depends what site types you're brainstorming. A list of the types of wiki-site that can be created using Wikidot, or just the most common ones?
It's another type of wiki that can be created with Wikidot. The type that most with educational status would probably use.
I just came up with a list of site categories that you hadn't added, which people might be interested to know is possible using Wikidot.

Ooooooh! You have a blog! *subscribes*
Ahh, I see. My personal opinion is that the site should demonstrate the powers of Wikidot, not the powers of 3rd party add ons within Wikidot.
I still don't understand, how does a teacher organise a class via Wikidot?
Do you mean in a Wikidot chatroom:
Teacher: Class! Quite down! You're too noisy! Just because I'm in the comfort of my own home, doesn't mean I can't hear you!
James: WTF?
Teacher: James! My psychic senses tell me that you're singing Aqua's Barbie Girl during class! I command that you do your maths now!
James: Wha? How did you know?
Wait! When did Wikidot develop psychic technology? Pieter, why didn't you blog this?
Yes please! We're brainstorming here!
LOL. That's not what I meant.
I'm referring to a wiki that would basically host a whole semester's worth of work (PDFs, etc), and would provide a way for students to learn the coursework using the wiki.
Or perhaps a group task. Myself and a small group of people at my University are using Wikidot for our group task. We:
I might add that the Snowleopard incident occurred on the same day that our first assessment task was due. That was very stressful at the time ;-)

Ahhhhhhhhahahahaha
That's a great idea!
Snowleopard… very stressful indeed…
It's a nice Operating System though…
That's what I also mean

You're right, sorry. Let me rephrase:
That's a great idea Steven!
How dare you Shane, stealing other people's ideas.
I… :O

Where will "Education" fit into this?
Edit: Shane, you be me to this :-)

LOL, yes I noticed that ;-) I posted only about 30s before you did

In the field of science or bussiness, groups of people sometimes work together on a document, with one guy writing this chapter and an other some thing else…
Maybe it is also wise to tell the deference between a wiki and wikidot, meaning you don't need a wikiserver or install anything on your personal webspace…
But if they really want the look and feel of for example wikipedia… let's make a demo that this is also possible with wikidot.

Since the name of the site is chozen, maybe we can focus on the things we want to show-off. Maybe we can recap at the top the suggestions that are made.

but it is a powerful name… "the power of wikidot" so I would say let's keep it
just like we did with ListPages
