I did some tweaking to the CSS to create a new class called .myblockquote. I needed to make a class so that the gallery descriptions could be totally wrapped in the nifty blockquote scheme James Kanjo came up with that uses the left and right quote graphic images.
By using a class, the %%content%% in the live template can be wrapped inside a div block to give the result you see in the screen shot. No need for the user to use any Wikidot syntax except for header H1 to create the title inside the block (now handled via an extra content section).

In trying to make the live template as easy as possible for the end user, I tried to create 2 content sections:
Then, in the live template, I'm trying to format it like this:
For some reason, everything is getting rendered as %%content{2}%% on the photo:x pages. Instead of something that looks like the screenshot in my first post, I get the gallery subtitle down inside the quotes as shown in the screenshot in this post. I probably made a simple mistake, but I can't figure it out. Can another set of eyes take a look?
Thanks!

I figured out the problem and may have uncovered a bug.
It appears that the comment lines inside the %%content{1}%% section was causing the issue. When I removed the comments from my pages, they rendered as expected.
As a workaround, I added another content section to the live template (so I could leave the instructional comments in the template) like so:
and used %%content{2}%% and %%content{3}%% to get the desired result.

What I found from the blackbelt site was that if you put a comment before the real content, that inserts a blank line which gets output with the content. So your header becomes:
This is a bug; leading whitespace should all be stripped IMO. I'll report it.

There is a fix coming, probably today.
Portfolio
OK, the fix has been pushed. You can try it now, Ed. Leading/trailing spaces and comments in the content sections are strictly ignored.
Portfolio
It works, but I think you broke something else (which might explain this potential can of worms.
If I move the comment line that is currently below the gallery module line above the gallery module line, the gallery is not displayed. instead, you just see the wiki syntax on the page ([[gallery ...]]

OK, we reverted the change but still I want to make this work. Blank lines before/after the content body should not be so significant. We need to analyse this in more detail.

I've spent a fair amount of time on my new pet project and wouldn't mind some feedback.
Highlights of what I've changed recently:
I think that this template is almost ready to be upgraded to "_stable", but I wouldn't mind some other opinions or other improvements you want to make before going "live". Can you all give it a test drive and share your thoughts?

I've noted it in our issue tracker. This has always annoyed me as well, thanks for pointing it out.

I'd say it's ready to go. It looks really nice. I've made a round of cosmetic changes to all Iron Giant sites, making the side bar less busy.
Portfolio
I think it's ready too. mariannalora gave it a test drive and got tripped up trying to upload files, so I added a [[button files ...]] to the template to help make it more obvious.
I also added the "created by" and "rating" fields to the list of galleries (and then thanked Erich!)
I'm going to give the project a _stable tag.

I'm really pleased to see people using my blockquote scheme! They look great in your photo galleries!
Yes, you did a nice job figuring that out. I just tweaked the margins a bit to pull the text out from under the quotes (my personal preference).

I've been working on a scheme to extend the capabilities of the photo gallery template to also support Flickr and Picassa. It seems to work quite well, but I'm having a personal problem with Flickr (I know, I should go to see_a_shrink.com for personal problems!).
I know my Flickr code works with my live template because when I paste in the photosetid that's being used in the personal blog template the gallery displays fine on my site. However, when I try to use a photosetid from one of my personal photosets I get an error. I haven't used Flicker in a couple years, but just dusted off my account to test this stuff. Does Wikidot's Flickr module only work with Flicker paid accounts? I'm very sure my photoset is set as public, so I don't think that's the problem. Here's the link to my photoset: http://www.flickr.com/photos/27747697@N05/sets/72157605676665251/
Never mind, it was a privacy setting. I had one photo in my photoset that was not set to public. Aargh! I'm a dumbass sometimes!
I'm using the last number in the URL in the flicker module for the photosetid. Can anyone shed some light?
If you want to see the new functionality in action, check these 2 links (the flicker gallery is still broken):
http://myfamilyphotos.wikidot.com/photos:6 (Picassa Webalbum)
http://myfamilyphotos.wikidot.com/photos:7 (Flickr Photoset with error message)
I'll port this over to the photo gallery template once I do a bit more cleanup.
Thanks,

I just added support for Picasa Webalbums and Flickr Photosets.
Check it out. [[iftags]] make this work pretty well, I think!
Does anyone else use any other photo services that could be added?

Hi Ed, I use Photobucket. Don't know if that would work with your gallery, but it might be worth a try! Sue.
Thanks Sue! You gave me something to do tonight! :)
I created a Photobucket account and was able to get it working. It was a bit trickier than Picasa or Flickr. I had to use an iframe with a code block to make it work, but was able to handle it all via a live template to still keep it pretty simple for the end user.
You can see it action here (and check out my cute grandkids!)

I'll plug it into the Iron Giant template tomorrow or Thursday. I want to do some more testing to see if I can improve the handling in the live template.
Thanks again. I think I'm going to like Photobucket. I wonder how many different accounts I'll end up with after this never-ending project!

I plugged Photobucket into the template this morning. It works great (according to my sister, at least!).
There is one minor caveat for those who clone the template site.
The issue is now resolved with the implementation of new variables available to ListPages and live templates (specifically, %%site_domain%% for this issue).

Sue,
Would you be willing to review Ed's site from a user's point of view (Clone through to using), and write a short text that I can use on the blog? Obviously I'll give you full credit.
Ed: hope you don't mind this, it seems like it might drive interest.
Portfolio
Not at all! I've worked hard on this and it would be nice if at least a few people wanted to use it.
What drove the recent changes was that the first thing my sister asked me after joining my site was "Can't I just sit back and watch a slide show?" Since Wikidot's gallery can't do that, I took it as a personal challenge to see what options were out there for embedding other service's content. I had Picasa and Flickr accounts gathering dust, so I started there. Then I added Photobucket as Sue suggested. I think these changes "add value" to the template. Hmmm… How do you add value to something that's already free? You know what I mean.
BTW, I added a "Help for Site Admins" page to the template. I think it's a good place to summarize what needs to be done shortly after cloning a new site from the template. If you can think of other "maintenance" items to add to that page, feel free.
Thanks,

That's very useful ! Thank you Ed and everybody else for your help !
By making it intuitive and fun to use. I think you're on the right path with this.

What a nice surprise to wake up to this being implemented already! The template has now been updated using the %%site_domain%% variable, so now this template should totally work "out of the box".
Thanks to the Wikidot team for rolling this change out!

I don't seem to be able to reply at the right place in this thread - I guess the comments only nest so deep!

Yes, very cute! I think your grand-daughter could be trouble when she's old enough to hit the supermarket shelves, judging by the way she's emptying the cupboard!
She already is. We have to keep everything out of arms' reach when we have her along in the shopping cart!
Thanks in advance for taking the template for a test drive. Looking forward to your comments.

Ummm, OK, I'll give it a go. Perhaps, not until next week as I have to clear the decks a bit first. I'm not seeking fame and fortune though - well, fortune maybe!! :)
Well, Ed and Pieter, here it is... long awaited, I know. Sorry about that. I don't have enough hours in the day at the moment.
I have documented my experience in the blog on the site, with a summary at the end which might be of use to Pieter for his blog.
Bottom line: I endorse this template and will be using it for a personal project some time. I think my Dad will love it as long as I set it up! Many thanks go to Ed for his hard work in creating it. :-))
Sue
Holy Moly, Sue! What an awesome job of documenting your experience. I was hoping you'd make time for a couple of paragraphs and we get a detailed, step-by-step account of the process.
Your review/how-to blog should probably be ported over into the template itself. I love the idea of plugging in step-by-step tutorials into the template sites. I'll try to return the favor on your default-template-v2 featuring "How to set up your new site".
Thanks again for such an outstanding review. You are the BEST!
