This is a design sketch for a new, simplified page deletion.

There are two major problems with the current delete action:

  1. It is too painful to use (seven clicks to permanently delete a page).
  2. Permanent page deletion is open to abuse by people who wish to vandalise the work of others.

We propose a solution based on a 1-click "move to trash" option that needs no confirmation. The current delete dialog would be completely removed. When the user clicks on "Move to trash" the page is immediately moved to the trash can, which is the deleted: category. All pages in the deleted: category have, instead of "Move to trash", an action "Restore", which moves the page back to where it was (renaming if there is an existing page with the same name).

The trash bin has no "Empty" action. Pages are held there forever.
