We have some proposals about changing the design of page actions. Having all common actions at the bottom of the page could be a bit distracting and inconvenient actually, beacuse it's sliding the page to the bottom. Pop-ups would be much easier. Please review the ideas, agree on the design and we can push it to development.
We decided that most of the page actions should be handled by pop-ups, not by expanding the page at the bottom. So as it follows:
Tags
The current method of tagging a page is painful to use due to the way it scrolls the page. This is one place where a popup would really work much better. This would work well with a keyboard shortcut.
This change is to remove the use of an input field at the bottom of the page and replace it with a popup.
category:page-name
[tags________________]
OK Cancel
We might split off hidden tags from visible tags so the Tag action only shows/changes visible tags. Hidden tags should, ideally, be set via action buttons so there is no scope for misspellings.
Renaming
The rename action is one where a popup would be really much nicer.
The rename pop-up dialogue should work exactly as one expects for a file: enter a new category/name, and click OK. Renaming is also how we move pages to other categories. The popup has two buttons (OK, Cancel) as we would expect.
Parenting
Same as it's now, but in the pop-up.
File uploads
Should be moved to a pop-up dialog that immediately jumps to the Select files step (skipping the two first clicks).
The link to the "old uploader" should also be clearly visible in the pop-up, for compatibility reasons.
We discourage direct comments on this thread: to discuss it, please start a sub-thread.
Running a few scenario's through my head, I can imagine that I'd want it to return to the parent page 99.9% of the time.
Gmail has this feature for most of it's actions (even allows you to undo sending a message a few seconds after you've clicked on 'send') and I use it regularly as I'm always clicking on the wrong button ;-) I agree that the 3 second disappearing pop-up should have a link to undo the action.
By removing a "are you sure you want to delete?" confirmation, you're asking for trouble with people accidentally deleting things they're not meant to. With the undo option, you're basically solving that problem as people can recover from clicking the wrong link accidentally.
Instead of showing category:page-name, I'd probably prefer the page title to be shown. When adding tags, the page has already been created and saved, so it's guaranteed to have a title unless the page creator deleted it intentionally (and if there is no title, nothing would be shown above the tags entry box).
Also, I'd like a way of allowing people to only edit the public tags. Private tags that start with an underscore (_) are used for organising pages and are the main reason I tend to prevent people access from editing tags, so that they don't break anything. <— Perhaps I should create a 'weneed' on the blog for that one, though I thought I'd mention it here.
I really like how this is set up already, the page title preview helps significantly. Pop-up would be great. Thanks :)
Where is this mentioned? It's not!
This is one of the main bottle-necks that my visitors get stuck on — making it appear as a pop-up would most likely solve half of the problems relating to people not understanding how to upload files properly. (The other half would be solved by a more useful Data Forms implementation)
And the link to the old upload system should remain as there are times when the usual one doesn't work and I need to explain to people that they can use the alternative link to upload files. It might be helpful to make it easier to find though.
