Private categories ready to test

Private categories are ready to test on the Wikidot.com test server, which is at something.wikidot.mywikidot.com. You will find that database is an old snapshot, you can login and try private categories.
There are a number of known issues with this still, which we're working on. Kudos to anyone who discovers faults in this initial version. We will push live as soon as it's stable.

Error logging in as follows:
Secure Connection Failed
www.wikidot.mywikidot.com uses an invalid security certificate.
The certificate is not trusted because it is self signed.
The certificate expired on 14/07/09 21:18.
(Error code: sec_error_expired_issuer_certificate)
* This could be a problem with the server's configuration, or it could be someone trying to impersonate the server.
* If you have connected to this server successfully in the past, the error may be temporary, and you can try again later.

Sorry for not warning about that. Just accept the certificate. I'll get better instructions for using the test server, there are some other certificate gotchas.

So… visit https://static-l.wikidot.mywikidot.com/ (e.g.) and accept the certificate it offers. Then the test environment should work for you.

It looks like my site is possibly too young to be in the snapshot. I could log in but was presented with a white screen with nothing on it but:
The site does not exist.
Edit: site was created on 8 Jan 2009 - 12:32:51 if that helps.

Yes, it's an old snapshot. You can create new sites on it, no problem.
I'll ask if we can get a more recent snapshot.

lol, when i logged in, it said i had a pm that was 270 some days old.

I hate having to guess what to do. As per the thread summary I went to http://strathpc.wikidot.mywikidot.com and after accepting the exception I created the site as it didn't exist (of course). It created a site called strathpc.wikidot.com (it doesn't create it with the ..mywikidot.com domain). But what then? There is nothing about private categories in the site manager as far as I can see, it's just the standard options. What have I failed to do, or what should I be looking for? Or is it not working?

It should have created the new site with the "mywikidot" part still in the domain. I found a wiki that I had already created as of whenever this backup was made, so I started editing that one instead of creating a new site. Perhaps creating a new site still doesn't work properly.

No because it says I'm not an admin of that site. The system clearly doesn't work at the moment so we'll have to wait for the test database to be updated as per Pieter's post.

One problem is that the test database is way out of date. I'll get this refreshed so that all your current sites exist there too.

We started on that refresh and it failed for reasons I've not followed. It'll be done asap.
