Do we need keys to do what breadcrumbs do?

This is what breadcrumb links, etc are for…
- BB should navigate to the parent page if any.
- JJ should navigate to the previous sibling, if any, by creation date.
- KK should navigate to the next sibling, if any, by creation date.
- UU should navigate to the first sibling by creation date.
- MM should navigate to the last sibling by creation date.
- LL should navigate to the first child page, by creation date, if any.

(I changed the subthread title to have a little meaning. :-/
All of the shortcuts are… shortcuts. You can click on Edit too, but there is a reason why Ctrl+E is more useful.
Same here. Are you saying that for some screen actions, shortcuts make no sense? I disagree, the notion of scrolling through items with the keyboard, instead of searching for random things to click on, is attractive and it's how I use, e.g. gmail.

I think these shortcuts have their place. Their use is optional, not to replace other navigational aids, so it's the user's preference as to which option to use.

The button "edit" exists, but we discuss CTRL-E… IMO that is the same so shortcut have a place. If I think these shortcuts are usefull, that is something else.
Related to parents I find them usefull… generally speaking there is always a link between child and parent. Mostly the parent is more general info and the child more specific.
I never use the siblings because (even thou it is made visible with the hover) you don't realy know where you are going to.
The web is not linear and I think "BACK" and "UP" (using the parent from the breadcrumbs or the shortcut) is fine for me.

Okay, you've got a good point there pieter. I'd say that I pretty much agree with what Steven wrote…
For siblings and child pages — you probably don't know to which one you're going if there is more than one of them.
Is this meant to be a replacement for the scrollbar, by navigating to threads in the same section?

The web is linear when you use linear patterns. http://patterns.wikidot.com. Issues, blog items, emails, notifications, these are linear.
So the navigation keys are an alternative to the scrollbar, but using a fixed sort (created_at).
